George Washington attended a session of Congress on June 15th 1775, attired not in a suit, but in his Virginia Regiment uniform. Why? Because we were in an undeclared war with the British. Then and there Congress appointed him Commander-in-Chief (General) of the Continental Army — and he changed his uniform.
